Once the weather gets cold, visitors are encouraged to stop by the Brecksville Nature Center during the weekend for the unique opportunity to hand feed chickadees. The experience of having the small birds land in your hand is something all ages will enjoy. If you haven't tried it yet, you should definitely put it on your bucket list this winter!

When you arrive, first stop into the nature center. The volunteers inside will explained what to do and give everyone a handful of black oil sunflower seeds to feed the birds. 

Tip: Try to plan your trip when the temperatures are cold and there is snow on the ground, because that is when the birds are most active.

There is a small fenced in area on one side of the nature center. Quietly pick a spot along the fence to stand, places some seeds in your hand and get ready for the excitement to begin. We waited less than a minute for the first bird to land on our hands. 

The feeling of the little bird feet on your fingers is so cool! We fed the birds for about 15 minutes and each of us had multiple birds land on our hands during that time. It was fun to see the reaction of the other people who were there to feed the birds too.

Tip: We had the most luck picking a spot to stand that was near one of the small trees. The birds would land on the tree, look at our hands and then fly over to get the seeds.

After feeding the chickadees you can head inside the Nature Center to warm up. There is a small kids area with various books and activities and a few chairs you can sit and relax in. Brecksville Reservation also has a number of hiking trails. Get a map from the visitors center and enjoy a hike through the woods.
