When I came across a recipe for Molasses Snow Candy, I knew I wanted to make some with the kids after the next big snowfall.
I picked up a bottle of molasses from the store, and abruptly dropped it on the garage floor as I was carrying in the groceries. Needless to say the glass bottle didn't make it and I had a sticky mess to clean up.
Not to be deterred, I got a second bottle of molasses during my next trip. Thankfully that bottle made it safely into the house.
The kids and I excitedly made a batch of the molasses snow candy. After anxiously waiting for it to cool we each took a piece to eat, and quickly realized that no one liked the taste of molasses.
I guess I should have taken the broken bottle of molasses as a sign!
Onto Plan B. I decided to try the recipe using honey instead of the molasses, and am happy to report that we really like Honey Snow Candy!
How to Make Homemade Honey Snow Candy
Here is the simple recipe that I use to make the Honey Snow Candy. I choose to make a small amount, but you can easily double the recipe if you want to make more.
- 1/2 cup Honey
- 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
- Large Bowl of Fresh Snow
- Candy Thermometer (optional)
Step 1 – Combine the honey and brown sugar in a pot. Place on stove over medium heat. Stir Constantly. The mixture when begin to boil. Boil until it reaches 245 degrees. If you don't have a candy thermometer, just boil for 5 minutes. Remember to stir the entire time so it doesn't burn.
Step 2 – Slowly pour the mixture over the bowl of snow.
Step 3 – Allow the candy to sit for a few minutes to cool completely.
Step 4 – Scoop the candy out of the snow and enjoy the sweet treat!
The candy has the texture of a sticky soft taffy and a delicious sweet honey flavor. You won't be able to save any of later as it turns back to liquid form after it warms up. But it tastes so good that you probably won't have any leftovers to worry about!
