Coon Family Christmas Lights – Synchronized Display in Macedonia

Coon Family Christmas Light Display 2012

2013 marks the 5th year for the Coon Family Christmas Light Display.  If you find yourself in the Summit County area this holiday season, you'll want to stop by to view this impressive display that consists of 20,000 lights that dance along to a variety of Christmas songs.  Tune your radios to 107.1 when you get there to hear the show.

We checked in with Amanda Coon, one of the creators, to find out more about the display.

All About Coon Family Christmas Lights

How many years have you been hosting the display? This will be the 5th year for our display. It started out with 16 channels and evolved from there.  Note:  The current display has 20,000 lights and over 90 channels.  View videos of the display on YouTube here.

What are your favorite aspects of the display?  I have two favorite parts of the display. We have a 17 foot animated Christmas tree comprised of 60 channels. Last year we added animated arches which can be programmed to any color.

Do you collect donations for any charities?  We have held a fundraiser/food drive for the Emergency Assistance Center for the last two years. We do not have a permanent box, so we usually advertise for a one or two night drop off and the family gathers the donations from the cars.

How long does it take you to set up each year? We usually stagger our setup, so it's hard to say how long it actually takes.  We take several weekends and sometimes days during the week. If I had to guess, I would say a good 80 hours of hard work just setting up lights. Programming takes a LOT of time, depending on how many songs I am able to program

Why do you do it? We do it because we enjoy it, and we love that people come back every year to see it.
