Tips for Visiting an Apple Orchard

Plan now which orchards and farms to visit – Many of the apple orchards and farms that host apple picking also offer a farm market, baked goods, cider house, corn maze, fall festival, and other family fun events during the harvest season. Use our list to choose which orchards have the activities your family will enjoy the most and keep the list handy for when the harvest season arrives.

Double check the events and harvest schedule before you go – Locally grown apples have a wide apple picking season that lasts for several weeks between late August through October or later. To avoid disappointment and missing the varieties of apples you’re looking for, we always recommend checking the orchard website or calling the farm for availability prior to visiting.

Check in when you arrive – Always visit the orchard stand before heading out to the field. The workers will help direct you to the best apple trees and locations of the varieties of apples you’re wanting to pick. They can also give you any details you need to know before you head out. Many offer a wagon ride to and from the field making the apple picking an even more fun for families.

Protect your kids (and yourself!) from the sun – Apple trees offer little protection, so if you’re planning to head out for the first apples of the season, prepare for sun and warm weather. Be sure to load up with sunscreen or wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.

Check the forecast before you go – Orchards and farm visits are often weather-dependent. Always check the farm website or Facebook page if the weather forecast doesn’t look promising.

Prepare for the weather (and recent weather) – Depending on the time you choose to go, especially later in the season, consider wearing layers so everyone is comfortable even in the cooler morning or evening hours. You’ll also want to wear shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting dirty, as the fields may be muddy. You may even want to bring an extra pair of clean socks and shoes for the drive home.

Be sure to bring some cash money – You’ll likely want to purchase some apple cider, baked goods, or participate in additional activities offered by the farm, so be sure to bring some cash money in case they don’t accept credit cards.

Remember your camera – Apple orchards and apple trees are often acres of amazing beauty. Make sure your phone is charged or bring along a camera to capture the natural beauty of the farm and the beautiful photo opportunities they provide.

While i do believe the lady should have been nicer, it is common sense to bring cash to any farmers market/pyo place. These farmers work hard to raise these plants and expect people to follow common practices. Hope your next PYO experience is better and always remember to bring cash! 🙂

Each Orchard will be different. You should be able to find out the last date they will be open by calling the individual orchard you are interested in.

      Thanks for checking ~ Danielle

I would like to know also. I’m going as close to all organic and just got a juicer. I don’t want to be juicing sprayed fruits. It kind of defeats the purpose. 🙂

Thanks for the link to my Heavenly Hill Farm post!
We actually stopped there on Friday to find we couldn’t pick apples ourselves. However, we did pick up an array of veggies and a peach pie that my husband really enjoyed. Here’s hoping we can go apple picking this summer again – we do love that farm…

You’re Welcome! I couldn’t believe so many orchard’s were negatively impacted by the frost. Hopefully you’ll be able to do some apple picking again this year. We are planning to go next weekend.
