Tips for Visiting a Lavender Field
Plan now which farms to visit – Many of the farms that host lavender fields also offer other fun farm activities and festival events during the blooming season. Use our list below to choose which farms have the activities your family will enjoy the most and keep the list handy for when the blooming season arrives.
Double-check the bloom schedule before you go – Ohio lavender fields can bloom anytime between June through July or later. We always recommend checking the farm website or calling the farm for availability prior to visiting.
Bring your own clippers for cutting your own – If you hope to cut your own lavender bouquet, be sure to confirm with the farm in advance that cutting is allowed. If so, some farms will have a limited number of clippers/hand pruners available to borrow so you may want to bring your own.
Check-in when you arrive – Always visit the farm stand before heading out to the field. The workers will help direct you to the best locations, inform you of details you need to know and answer any questions you may have before you go.
Protect your kids (and yourself!) from the sun – Lavender by nature thrives on full sun, so it’s likely you’ll be spending most of your visit in the sun too. Be sure to load up with sunscreen or wear a hat to keep the sun off your face.
Check the forecast before you go – Lavender field visits are often weather-dependent. Always check the farm website or Facebook page if the weather forecast doesn’t look promising.
Prepare for the weather (and recent weather) – Depending on the time you choose to go, consider wearing layers so everyone is comfortable even in the cooler morning or evening hours. You’ll also want to wear shoes or boots that you don’t mind getting dirty, as the fields may be muddy. You may even want to bring an extra pair of clean socks and shoes for the drive home.
Be sure to bring some cash money – You’ll likely want to purchase a beautiful lavender bouquet or participate in additional activities offered by the farm, so be sure to bring some cash money in case they don’t accept credit cards.
Remember your camera – Lavender fields are often acres of amazing beauty. Make sure your phone is charged or bring along a camera to capture their gorgeous blooms and the incredible photo opportunities they provide.
Keep your lavender blooms fresh – In order to keep your newly cut or purchased blooms fresh for as long as possible, you may want to bring your own jar or bucket of water to keep them hydrated. In addition, make sure you don’t leave them in a hot car for too long. Once you have the home, trim the bottoms of each stem under cool running water and arrange them in a vase with fresh water and flower food.
