Located in Cleveland Metroparks Hinckley Reservation, the stone carvings at Worden’s Ledges are a fascinating treasure all ages will enjoy. The short .7-mile hike leads through beautiful scenery and moss-covered ledges. Then out of nowhere, you’ll discover historic carvings among the stones.

History of Worden’s Ledges in Cleveland
Worden’s Ledges are named after the old landowner, Hiram Worden. However, it was his son-in-law Noble Stuart who is the artist behind the carvings.
Noble Stuart created the stone figures and carvings in the 1940s and he captured a variety of unique faces and scenes including:
- Large Sphinx
- The faces of George Washington and Ty Cobb
- Ship
- Bible
- Cross
- Crucifix
- Various Names and dates
It’s said that the various carvings represented things that were important to Stuart and his loved ones. For example, the bible and cross were for his wife (Nettie), and the ship was for his father.
Where to find the Stone Carvings at Worden’s Ledges
There are two parking lots near the trailhead and the Worden’s Ledges Loop Trail is located right by the main parking lot. The trail is clearly marked and approximately 0.7 miles long. At first, the trail is relatively flat with no rock formations in sight. At one point we thought we were going the wrong way, but kept going and a few moments later the ledges came into site.
Helpful Tip: The entrance and the first part of the trail can get muddy. Make sure to bring boots or shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring an extra set of shoes and a bag so you can change into clean shoes for the ride home.
The ledges and rock formations are beautiful and fun to explore and then all of a sudden you’ll discover the carvings. It’s like discovering a hidden secret and as you go around each corner you discover more and more. If you visit multiple times, you could easily find something new each time.

- If you want to go on a longer hike, you can extend your walk along the bridal trail (and you might even see a horse or two). Whipp’s Ledges is also nearby

My family has been going to Hinckley ledges for generations. We always called the Worden carvings “The Faces “. My great grandfather Mattingly was a friend to Worden. And is buried in Hinckley cemetery. I remember seeing the mini sphinx when I was very little and if you keep going past there , you will find an old “bath” by a big rock with a natural spring coming out. Haven’t been back to visit in ages.
I knew Noble Stuart and visited him in his home in Hinckley. He was a fascinating man and divulged interesting stories during our visits.
