Did you know that there are many local CSA farms in Northeast Ohio where you can not only buy locally grown produce and farm products but also support the farmers who grow and produce them? Learn more about CSA and find a group near you that offers the fresh vegetables, meats, and other food products your family needs.
What is a CSA and How Do They Work?
CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is an opportunity for you to join a group of others in your community to purchase produce and foods from a local farm (or group of farms) in the area. By joining and becoming a member of a CSA you are financially supporting and encouraging local agriculture and receive fresh, locally grown farm products in return usually on a weekly basis throughout the growing season.
Once you find a CSA that produces the foods and products your family needs, you will join the CSA by committing and purchasing your “share” of the season’s harvest in advance.
Some programs require full payment early in the season and others offer a payment plan that fits your budget with a choice of membership options. Pricing varies starting as low as $15 per week for a small share.
For your convenience, most CSAs offer multiple pick up locations and pick up days (every Friday for example) and a few also offer home delivery.
Benefits of a CSA
Unlike most grocery stores, CSAs provide your family the freshest produce and products available, much having been picked within 24 hours of pick up. Many of the farms use little or no pesticides so the products are often grown with organic methods including some with USDA organic certification.
What Local Foods Do CSAs Offer?
Like a farmers market, CSAs offer a wide variety of produce and farm products. Some of the fresh foods available in Northeast Ohio include garden vegetables, eggs, honey, cheese, fruit, meats, dairy, maple syrup, and more. Others also offer heirloom and unique varieties of vegetables and herbs, baked goods, grains and nuts.
Other benefits include the opportunity for farm visits where you can learn about the CSA’s farming methods first hand and enjoy the confidence that comes with knowing exactly where your food is grown or raised.
If you like to buy local and appreciate fresh food, this list can help you find a CSA near you.
