Throughout the year, we like to periodically plan weekend getaways. There are so many great places within driving distance of NE Ohio and weekend trips help break up our everyday routine, give us something to look forward to and are often much less expensive than a full week vacation.
This winter we decided to take another trip to Warren County Ohio. It’s a quick 4-5 hour drive from any Northeast Ohio location which makes it a great destination for a weekend getaway. We visited a few years ago and had a blast, so we knew it was time for a return trip.
5 Reasons We Like to Stay at Great Wolf Lodge
During our visit we stayed at Great Wolf Lodge. We love indoor water parks and Great Wolf Lodge is one of our favorites. It’s clean, has a lot of fun water slides for all ages and there is so much to do throughout the hotel. Here are 5 of the reasons we love Great Wolf Lodge.
# 1 – The Size of Great Wolf Lodge
The lodge is huge, the rooms are spacious and the common areas (lobby, water park, arcade and restaurants) never feel over crowded.
During our time in the water park we easily found chairs to place our towels and bag on and the lines for the water slides were short.
Tip: We found that the water park was the least busy in the morning between 10am-1pm and in the evening between 6pm-10pm.
# 2 – The Water Slides
The indoor water park was filled with 12 different water slides, including one that felt roller coaster, one with a raft that could easily fit 4-6 people, many that sent riders twisting and turning and even facing backwards at points during the ride. Of course, there are also a handful of slides and a shallow pool for younger children.
# 3 – The Wave Pool, Water Basketball, Water Playground and more!
The water slides aren’t the only thing to do in the water park. There is also a water playground with interactive water features that spray and dump water in various directions, as well as the famous dump bucket which releases 1,000 gallons of water every 5-10 minutes.
We also enjoyed playing water basketball, splashing in the wave pool and floating in the lazy river.
# 4 – The Themed Family Suites
This year we stayed in the Wolf Den Suite. This is one of the many themed rooms available a Great Wolf Lodge. While the cost is higher than the standard family suite, the kids loved the bunk beds and TV in their wolf den, and my husband and I enjoyed having a quiet place to talk while the kids were playing in their den.
# 5 – There is a Dorm Sized Refrigerator and Microwave in the Rooms
Anytime we stay the night away from home, we always pack food and drinks for the trip. Doing this allows us to save money because we don’t have to eat out for every meal.
The microwave located in the suite allowed us to heat up the breakfast we brought and we were able to keep our water and snacks for the next day cold in the fridge.
Tip: Bring your drinks in reusable bottles so you can refill them throughout the day at the water fountains located in the indoor water park. Or if you’d rather purchase drinks, consider getting the cup that allows you to get free refills during your stay (approximately $13)
Overall, we had a great time at Great Wolf Lodge. It was the perfect winter weekend getaway and we can’t wait to plan our next trip.
