Top Tips for Going Ice Skating with Kids
Know before you go – Many of the rinks offer special events, lessons, and scheduled open skate times. Once you’ve picked a rink, be sure to check their website or Facebook page for details on what’s happening the day you want to go.
Take your own equipment – If you have your own, be sure to double-check to make sure your kid’s equipment still fits properly, in case the kids have grown since the last time you went.
Set realistic expectations with your kids – Talk with your kids and let them know that the rink could be busy. Discuss rink safety and what to expect. Once you’ve arrived, pick a rendezvous point for your younger children in case you become separated.
Have the kids rest before they go – Skating is a fun activity but it can be physically tiring. To help ensure younger kids have a good time, consider having them take a nap or rest for a while before going.
Protect your kids (and yourself!) from the weather – Check the weather in advance and consider wearing layers so everyone is comfortable even in the cold.
Remember your camera – Make sure your phone is charged or bring along a camera to capture fun skating photo ops.
Check the forecast before you go – Most of the outdoor rinks are weather-dependent. Always check the rink website or Facebook page if the weather forecast doesn’t look promising.
